Pittsburgh Concord K-5 Prepares for Expressions of Freedom With School-Wide Contest

To celebrate Black History Month and honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, students at Pittsburgh Concord K-5 have been getting ready for the 8th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. “Expressions of Freedom” Writing Contest, sponsored by Citizen’s Bank in partnership with the New Pittsburgh Courier, WAMO-FM, WPXI-TV and the Pittsburgh Public Schools.

In celebration of the 45th Anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s famous “I Have a Dream Speech,” students have been asked to write a short essay describing what they can do to fulfill Dr. King’s dream.

At Pittsburgh Concord K-5, a school wide competition was held among those students in 2nd – 5th grade who wrote short essays for submission into the larger district-wide contest. Oasis tutor and University of Pittsburgh professor, Mrs. Daugherty, judged the entries and chose one winner from each grade level.

The school winners were Lacey Mangiantini (grade 2), Gabrielle Del Rio (grade 3), Melissa Baumgart (grade 4), and Alexis Harper (grade 5).

Winners each received a Pittsburgh Concord t-shirt, pencil and journal.

Pittsburgh Concord students are anxiously waiting to see if a Concord student wins the District contest as they continue to perfect their writing skills.

Last year, 24 students across the District each won:

  • A $100 savings bond from Citizens Bank.
  • A chance to produce a portion of their essay and have it broadcasted on WAMO-FM or WPXI-TV.
  • A one year family membership to the Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh.

This year’s winners will be notified by their teachers the week of December 15, 2008.
