Pittsburgh West Liberty thanks Humane Society for readings with a pet supplies drive

The students and staff of West Liberty K-5 are sponsoring a pet food and supply drive as a way of saying “Thank You” to the Humane Society for helping us celebrate literacy. On Wednesday, May 27th, the Humane Society brought in guest readers and their canine companions to read to each classroom. Each student walked away with 2 free books provided by the Humane Society to coincide with the program “Tutors with Tails.” They readers taught the students about therapy dogs, rescued dogs and ways to prevent dog bites.

Pittsburgh Schiller Goes Green with Trees

The Western Pennsylvania Conservancy Group in collaboration with the Brickman Group planted bushes and trees outside of Pittsburgh Schiller. The landscaping enhancement adds new green space and a seating area for the students to connect with nature and their surrounding environment. (more…)

Students from Pittsburgh Phillips to have Poetry Published

Several 4th and 5th grade students from Pittsburgh Phillips K-5 have had their poetry accepted for publication by Creative Communication. The students’ work will appear in the Spring 2009 hard bound anthology titled “A Celebration of Poets.” This publication selects several hundred entries from several thousand submitted, so this is an incredible accomplishment for the children. Ms. Colleen Pilarski, a Phillips teacher, worked with the children throughout the writing process and submitted the work on their behalf. All the students’ poems are now eligible for the final competition, which includes $3,000 in prizes. Go to www.poeticpower.com/judge to see the poems and help decide the student winners. (more…)

Pittsburgh Manchester Students Against Violence Via Education Week

Last week Pittsburgh Manchester received a proclamation from the City of Pittsburgh, Office of the Mayor. Mayor Ravenstahl honored the hard work of the students and the staff of the school by proclaiming May 11 – 15, 2009, “Manchester Students Against Violence Via Education Week.” (more…)

Pittsburgh Pioneer Principal, Dr. Sylbia Kunst, wins Excellence for Advancing Communication Award

Dr. Sylbia Kunst, Principal at Pittsburgh Pioneer, won the Saluting Principal; Excellence for Advancing Communication (SPEAC) Award in May, which is “Better Speech and Hearing Month.” This award recognizes a principal in PPS that supports the speech-language program and students in an exemplary manner. City schools seek to make buses cleaner

The Pittsburgh Public Schools is poised to join a growing number of districts nationwide working to purify the air inside and outside of school buses.The school board will vote Wednesday on a new round of contracts with 19 carriers that provide yellow buses or other vehicles to transport students. The five-year agreements would take effect next school year.

Families Invited to Learn More about The Pittsburgh Promise at East End Schools Promise-Ready Event

Ten East End schools serving students in grades K-8 will come together to host a special East End Schools Promise-Ready Event. This event will focus primarily on how important it is for both parents and students to begin working towards and talking about college at an early age. The Pittsburgh Promise Executive Director Saleem Ghubril will be speaking at the event and will be on hand to answer questions from parents and family members about how The Promise can help their child attend college. Congratulations to 2009 PNC African American History Contest Winners

Two students from Pittsburgh Liberty and one from Pittsburgh Minadeo won top prizes in the 2009 PNC African American History Contest. Fifth grade Liberty student Theodoros Papazekos won 1st prize in the 10-13 age group for his poem about Martin Luther King Jr. and classmate Eddie Bey won 2nd prize in the same age group for his rap about Rosa Parks, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and President Barack Obama. Also, Alana Yoffee, 3rd grade student from Pittsburgh Minadeo, won 2nd prize in the 6-9 age group for her video about Carl B. Stokes, the first African-American mayor of any United States city.
