Pittsburgh Public Schools to Apply to State for Act 80 Wavier Due to Snow Days
March 26, 2010 – Becomes a Full Student Day in Session
The Pittsburgh Public Schools will apply for five Act 80 days from the State in hopes of
maintaining Spring Break for students who missed seven days of school due to recent inclement
weather.
The State requires students receive 180 days of instruction. The District’s calendar is
182 days. At this evening’s Legislative Meeting the Board approved the application that if
approved by the State will prevent the need for students to make up school days lost due to
snow.
The Board additionally voted to adjust the District’s 2009-10 school calendar for all of its schools
so that all schools will now be in session a full day on March 26, 2010, which was originally a
half day for all students.
Act 80 days require teachers to attend school but not students. The District is requesting the
following five professional development days as Act 80 Days to meet the required 180 days of
instruction for the 2009-10 school year:
- For all eight Accelerated Learning Academies: August 17, 18 and 19, 2009
- For all non-Accelerated Learning Academies: August 31, 2009 and September 1 and 7,
2009; and - For all schools: June 17 and 18, 2010
