Board Votes to Adjust School Calendars for 2010-11 and 2011-12 School Years

Transition Day Added to 9th Graders Calendar, First Day of Kindergarten Delayed Three Days
An extra half-day has been added to the start of the school year for District 9th Grade students to ensure a smooth transition to high school. In the past, the District’s 9th Grade Nation Transition Program was held in the summer. The calendar change integrates activities into the regular school year so that all 9th graders and families have the opportunity to participate in the transition program. The adjusted 9th grade calendar does not affect the start date for all other high school students. (more…)

Fathers stand for education: Students take fathers to school for day of bonding

Friday, May 21, 2010 was proclaimed “Take a Father to School Day” in Pittsburgh, by a proclamation issued by Councilman Doug Shields on Thursday, May 20. Superintendent of Schools Mark Roosevelt, Board Member Mark Brentley, Sr., founder and co-chairperson of Take a Father to School Day in Pittsburgh Public Schools, and Board Vice Presidents Thomas Sumpter and William Isler were joined in Council Chambers by approximately 20 fathers and positive role models, including former Board Member Randall Taylor, to receive the proclamation.

The District’s new summer Parent-Teacher Conferences will allow parents to learn about how to prevent “summer slide” and keep their kids on the path to Promise-Readiness. The June 23-24 Parent-Teacher Conferences will provide an important opportunity for parents to review their student’s strengths and areas for growth and to learn more about summer learning opportunities that can prevent learning losses during the summer.
