Winners announced for the 2011 Dr. Martin Luther King writing contest

The results of 2011 Dr. Martin Luther King writing contest are in.  This year there were over 1100 essays entered and 55 students will be honored at the January 17, 2011 awards ceremony at August Wilson Center for African American Culture located at 980 Liberty Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15222.

Pittsburgh Schenley to Celebrate Class of 2010 International Baccalaureate Diploma Recipients

PA Interscholastic Hockey League to host City Game at new Winter Classic Outdoor Community Rink

Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League (PIHL) City Game will take place on December 27th at 9:40 p.m. at the temporary Winter Classic Outdoor Community rink being built between Heinz Field and Stage AE. The Pittsburgh Allderdice Dragons will take on the Pittsburgh Carrick Cougars for a regular season hockey game. (more…)

Student Volunteers Brighten Up Pittsburgh Langley High School with Greenery

On November 1st, a group of 16 Langley High School students gathered outside to help “green” their school grounds. Under the supervision of English teacher Ms. Jennifer Wright and with guidance and technical assistance from Western Pennsylvania Conservancy (WPC) staff, the students successfully planted over 40 new shrubs and 8 trees outside the school’s entrance.

Students Work to Beautify Pittsburgh Perry High School with Greenery

On November 3rd, a group of Perry High School students teamed up with staff from Western Pennsylvania Conservancy (WPC) to help “green” the outside of their school. The group, made up of over 20 students from multiple grades and classes, spent part of their school day creating a new perennial garden to highlight the school’s entrance.

Dozens of Student Volunteers Help Green Up Pittsburgh Carrick High School

On November 8th, a passionate group of Pittsburgh Carrick High School students teamed up with staff from the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy (WPC) to beautify their school landscape with new greenery. The group of volunteers, made up of about 25 students and 3 supervising teachers, spent the school day planting trees and shrubs and spreading layers of fresh mulch around the newly installed plants. WPC School Grounds Greening Project Adds a Touch of Green to Several PPS Schools This Fall

On a brisk fall morning in front of Pittsburgh Langley High School, a group of students stand around an empty hole in the ground. They patiently watch as workers in green “STAFF” coats show them how to plant a row of rhododendron shrubs. As soon as the demonstration is over, the students eagerly rush to grab shovels and claim their own plots of earth. The goal for the day is simple yet substantial: plant over 40 new shrubs and 8 trees to highlight the entrance of their school.
