Guest Grocery Baggers’ School Superintendent Dr. Linda Lane and Saleem Ghubril from The Pittsburgh Promise to ‘Bag and Gab’ about The Promise at the Shadyside Market District

Pittsburgh Public Schools Superintendent Linda Lane and Pittsburgh Promise Executive Director Saleem Ghubril will volunteer as “guest grocery baggers” to support the current in-store, at-the register promotion for shoppers to make donations to The Pittsburgh Promise, a scholarship program aimed at removing the financial barrier to higher education for eligible students graduating from the Pittsburgh Public Schools. From 12 noon - 1 p.m. this Saturday, April 14, at the Shadyside Market District, Dr. Lane and Mr. Ghubril will begin guest bagging and talking with customers about the scholarship program for city school graduates.  The Shadyside Market District is located at 550 Centre Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15232. 9th Grade Nation Civics Students Committed to Change

Ninth grade students from Pittsburgh Milliones 6-12 University Prep are sharing their commitment to “Be the Change” with all of Pittsburgh. In collaboration with Carlow University, PCTV, and the Pittsburgh Courier, students discussed issues facing their communities and developed possible solutions to address them.  (more…)

District Students Shine at Civics Fair 2010

Approximately 140 students from nine high schools across the region attended Civics Fair 2010, which was held at the August Wilson Center for African American Culture on December 10.  Students presented their civic engagement projects to judges who are civic, media, business and education leaders.

Pittsburgh Brashear 9th graders honor veterans for Memorial Day

In recognition of the sacrifices made by thousands of veterans 9th grade students from Pittsburgh Brashear High School helped to spruce up local war memorials for Memorial Day ceremonies in the Overbrook, Knoxville and Southside neighborhoods. The service project was conducted as part of the 9th Grade Nation “Civics: Be the Change!,” a rigorous project-based, activity-oriented course designed to bring civics alive and make it more relevant for students. Pittsburgh Public Schools 9th Grade Nation to Gather for 2010 Civics Summit

As part of their Civics: Be the Change coursework, students of the District’s 9th Grade Nation will gather for the 2010 Civics Summit. This culminating event planned in collaboration with Pittsburgh Cares will be held at Duquesne University May 17-20, 2010.

Summer Dreamers Enrollment Deadline Extended to May 14th

More Than 2,000 Students Have Signed Up for This Exciting New Camp
More than 2,000 students in grades 5-7 have signed up to be a part of the District’s Summer Dreamers Academy. That’s a 309% increase compared to last year’s enrollment. Due to the overwhelming response and to ensure that all students have a chance to take part in this exciting new camp, the camp enrollment deadline has been extended to May 14th. (more…)
