Pittsburgh Carrick Jewelry & Metals Program students honored for design of 2011 Richard S. Caliguiri Awards Medal

Congratulations to the jewelry and metals students and teachers of Pittsburgh Carrick High School for their participation in designing and creating the Richard S. Caliguiri Awards for the 2011 Great Race. Bethany Carpenter, Nicole Davis and Dalton Lewis along with their teachers Michael Dean and Susan Loskoch were asked by Mike Radley, Director of Parks & Recreation and Citiparks Department of Special Events to design and create the awards for the second year in a row. Pittsburgh Allderdice Hall of Fame Set to Induct Alumni Powerhouse

Pittsburgh Allderdice graduates live by the theme of “Know Something, Do Something, Be Something,” and being something is a great way to describe this year’s inductees into the school’s Hall of Fame. On Thursday, November 3rd the school will induct an award winning film director, a journalist, a superior court judge, a former principal, a star NFL running back, and a former mayor of Pittsburgh as part of its 3rd Class of Alumni Hall of Fame Inductees Ceremony. The public is invited to the ceremony beginning at 7:00 p.m. and taking place in the school’s auditorium, located at 2409 Shady Avenue, Pittsburgh PA 15217. Please RSVP to (412) 422-4846. Pittsburgh Mifflin Proves That Kids Can Make Your Hair Fall Out!

At least that is what the Principal of the K-8 school is thinking. It was during a PSSA pep rally that the Principal of Pittsburgh Mifflin met with the students to wish them luck on their testing. The rally was prepared by teachers to motivate the students to do their best work and review best practices for test taking. The real motivation came at the end of the rally when the principal Mr. Littlehale surprised everyone by his brave pledge. He told the audience that he would shave his head at the back to school event in August if the school made AYP. The students left the pep rally with smiles on their faces that can only conclude that they were up to the challenge. (more…)

Sarah Heinz House Boys & Girls Club Welcomes Outstanding Club Teen Back Home as National Youth of the Year

Nicholas Foley Wins Honor and over $60,000 for College, Meets Celebrity Club Alumni

Sarah Heinz House Boys & Girls Club welcomes home Nicholas Foley, who traveled to Washington, D.C., to compete for the title of National Youth of the Year for Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA). Foley was named the winner yesterday at a Congressional Breakfast, also attended by Club alum and BGCA spokesperson, Denzel Washington, and Club alum and National Youth of the Year Ambassador, Ashanti.

As the 2011-12 National Youth of the Year, Foley receives a $50,000 college scholarship from The Rick and Susan Goings Foundation, in addition to $11,000 in scholarships already awarded to him as a regional winner by the Youth of the Year program’s national sponsor, Tupperware Brands Corporation.

Recent Pittsburgh Oliver Grad wins Jr. Olympic Judo Gold, spot on National team

Pittsburgh’s Devante Tiller swept undefeated today through his division at the USA Judo Junior Olympic National Championships in Irving, Texas, automatically earning him a spot on the U.S. team that will compete in the IJF Junior World Championships in Cape Town, South Africa, Nov. 3-6, 2011. Pittsburgh Oliver Senior Honored by International Photography Contest, City of Pittsburgh to Purchase Winning Work

April 25 2011 – Cody Voye, a senior at Pittsburgh Oliver High School, was awarded an honorable mention in the 2011 International Heritage Photographic Experience (IHPE) contest. The IHPE photography competition invites young adults from around the world to create & submit images that evoke the heritage of the city and surroundings they each come from.

Cody’s photograph, Descent into Pittsburgh, relays the heritage of Pittsburgh in a bright red carriage sliding down the Duquesne incline to a snow-bound Carson Street below. In addition to the award, City officials took note of the iconic image of the landscape and have offered to purchase and display the photo on-site at the Duquesne incline.

U.S. Department of Education funding will support District’s bold initiatives to empower effective teachers and improve student outcomes

Pittsburgh Public Schools today received a grant award of $39.5 million* from the U.S. Department of Education’s 2010 Teacher Incentive Fund (TIF) program.

*Shortly after this release was sent the Federal Department of Education revised its TIF grant award amounts.  The revised amount awarded to the District is $37,368,432.00.

Pittsburgh Leads Public Education with Innovative Approach to Contract Negotiations
The Pittsburgh Public Schools and the Pittsburgh Federation of Teachers have signed new five-year collective bargaining agreements around what matters most – advancing the teaching profession in a way that is aligned with the common mission of improving student achievement. The Board approved the historic agreements at a Special Legislative meeting held this evening.

Pittsburgh Public Schools win multiple 2010 Gene Kelly Awards

Pittsburgh Schenley High School won three 2010 Gene Kelly Awards for Best Ensemble, Best Choreography and Best Musical in Level I. The CLO awarded Pittsburgh CAPA 6-12 student Carter Redwood a Gene Kelly Cash Scholarship of $5,000 to study performing or technical theater arts. Also, Pittsburgh South Brook 6-8 was presented with the Charles Gray Award for Special Achievement in Arts Education in recognition of creative arts classes that are a required part of the curriculum.
