Pittsburgh Leads Public Education with Innovative Approach to Contract Negotiations
The Pittsburgh Public Schools and the Pittsburgh Federation of Teachers have signed new five-year collective bargaining agreements around what matters most – advancing the teaching profession in a way that is aligned with the common mission of improving student achievement. The Board approved the historic agreements at a Special Legislative meeting held this evening.

Pittsburgh Public Schools win multiple 2010 Gene Kelly Awards

Pittsburgh Schenley High School won three 2010 Gene Kelly Awards for Best Ensemble, Best Choreography and Best Musical in Level I. The CLO awarded Pittsburgh CAPA 6-12 student Carter Redwood a Gene Kelly Cash Scholarship of $5,000 to study performing or technical theater arts. Also, Pittsburgh South Brook 6-8 was presented with the Charles Gray Award for Special Achievement in Arts Education in recognition of creative arts classes that are a required part of the curriculum.

Pittsburgh Brashear SADD Chapter is awarded $1500

The SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) chapter at Pittsburgh Brashear took 1st and 2nd place for their initiative to prevent distracted driving by teens as part of the program “FOCUS – Action Against Distraction.”

There’s less than one week to go until the Pittsburgh Marathon and the Pittsburgh Promise runners have been training hard for the big day. Pittsburgh Oliver Junior ROTC Cadets Awarded National Scholarships

Pittsburgh Oliver High School Junior ROTC cadets Asia Johns and Justin Stadelman were respectively awarded 4-Year and 3-Year Army ROTC scholarships. These highly coveted scholarships were awarded through a national competition, and will pay for tuition, fees, and books while providing each student with a monthly stipend of between $300-$500 depending upon the year of the scholarship. Cadet Lieutenant Colonel Johns, the Bear Battalion Commander, has opted to utilize her scholarship at Slippery Rock University where she plans on majoring in physical therapy. Cadet Command Sergeant Major Stadelman plans on utilizing his scholarship at Edinboro University where he plans on majoring in criminal justice.

CAPA Student Wins 1st Place in Film Competition

Veronica Cheng, a student at Pittsburgh CAPA High School, won 1st place in the High School Film division of the 2nd Annual Creative Arts Festival and Experience (CAFE) on March 19, 2010. Ms. Cheng was awarded $500 for her film in the competition sponsored by the Douglas Education Center.

Pittsburgh Allderdice High School Students Excel in Competitions

PITTSBURGH March 22, 2010 – Students from Pittsburgh Allderdice High School recently put their knowledge to the test and won top honors in three regional competitions. Student teams took first place in two science competitions, the JETS (Junior Engineering and Technical Society) Teams Competition on March 11th, and the FIRST Robotics Competition held March 12-13th. Additionally, at the Regional Japanese Language Competition on March 8, three Pittsburgh Allderdice students took top honors.

Pittsburgh Oliver High School junior Devante Tiller won a bronze medal Sunday in the 81-kg division at the USA Judo Youth and Scholastic National Championships in Spokane, Washington.
