Carrick PYLA students get their voices heard

In 2010, Pittsburgh Carrick High School PYLA teamed up with Student Voices to creat an avenue for their voices to be heard throughout the city of Pittsburgh. The end resulted in a radio spot on 96.1 KISS FM and a billboard that went up high above the streets of Carrick. Click here to read more.

2010 Continuing Education Scholarship Winners Announced

Congratulations to Amanda Geruschat of Pittsburgh Carrick High School, Zena Lapp of Pittsburgh Schenley High School and Michelle Underwood of Pittsburgh CAPA High School. All three students have been awarded a $1500 Continuing Education Scholarship for the post-secondary institution of their choosing. Great work!

District schools participating in Lots2Give Program: Vote online now!

Three District schools have been selected to participate in the Big Lots 2010 Lots2Give program. Pittsburgh Carrick High School, Pittsburgh Stevens K-8 and Pittsburgh Murray PreK-8 will be the recipients of school supplies that the Big lots stores are collecting on behalf of schools in their area. To be eligible for an additional $100,000 in cash prizes, each school had to submit a video to be voted on by the public.

Please visit the Big Lots website from June 7 through July 15 to vote for our schools. It is possible to vote up to 3 times per day and on multiple days.

Free Clinic for School Vaccinations needed in the Fall

Get shots for next school year out of the way and enjoy the Summer! Immunize now and become eligible for a buy-one-get-one pass for County Pools this Summer.

The Allegheny County Health Department is holding a special free vaccination clinic on Tuesday, June 8, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., for children who need to get caught up with the vaccines that will be required when they return to school in the fall.

The clinic, to be held at the Health Department’s office at 3441 Forbes Avenue in Oakland, will provide free parking after 4:30 p.m. in the lot behind 3333 Forbes Avenue. No appointment is necessary and parents should bring their child’s vaccination records to the clinic.

Whole Foods Culinary Camp invites Pittsburgh Public Schools high school students June 21-25

There is an opportunity for PPS students to attend Culinary Camp, sponsored by Whole Foods, at the East Liberty market from June 21 through June 25, 2010 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Students who are currently in the Culinary Arts program of CTE are the targeted audience, but all PPS high school students are eligible. Whole Foods Market’s Chef and Healthy Eating experts will inspire their imagination and encourage their creativity as they discover the secrets to amazingly tasty, healthy meals. At the end of the week, the students will be challenged by a Top Chef style cooking competition where participants will work in teams to create dishes that culminate in a paid apprenticiship in Whole Food’s kitchen (at age 18). Applications are available from Culinary Arts teachers.
