We are proud to announce that Pittsburgh CAPA 6-12 English teacher, Anne Paolicelli, is one of 10 national finalists for the Great American Teach-off. Anne is a graduate of Whittier Elementary School, Rogers CAPA Middle School, and Brashear High School, and her mother, Libby Chengery, is a retired teacher from Arlington Elementary. Anne is Pittsburgh Public Schools through and through!

Seven Pittsburgh Public Schools recognized by Pennsylvania Horticultural Society for Greening Efforts

Recently the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS) recognized 65 sites in Pennsylvania, Delaware and New Jersey its Community Greening Award. This annual award identifies greening and beautification efforts throughout the region that offer special benefits to local communities. Nominated sites are evaluated based on plant variety, design, use of space, and horticultural practices. Fourteen Western Pennsylvania Conservancy projects received a 2011 PHS Community Greening Award, including the following seven green spaces at Pittsburgh Public School grounds:

  • Pittsburgh Allderdice High School rain garden
  • Pittsburgh Greenfield K-8 outdoor classroom
  • Pittsburgh West Liberty K-5 gardens
  • Pittsburgh Linden K-5 outdoor classroom
  • Pittsburgh Pioneer Special Education Center sensory gardens
  • Pittsburgh Schiller K-8 sitting area
  • Pittsburgh Stevens K-8 butterfly gardens

Students Give Pittsburgh Fulton’s Nature Yard a Revitalizing Makeover

On October 28, student volunteers at Pittsburgh Fulton helped to revitalize their school’s garden. Under the supervision of faculty members Kathy Mullen and Leonard Patrick, students added 190 fresh perennials to the previously overgrown green space. Thanks to the dedicated volunteers, the garden named the “Nature Yard” now adds a welcoming touch to the school’s Hampton Street entrance. (more…)

Students Plant Spring Crocuses at Pittsburgh Arsenal

On October 17 and 18, student volunteers helped to plant nearly 2,000 flower bulbs in an effort to beautify Pittsburgh Arsenal. With the help of the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy (WPC) and the supervision of Arsenal teachers, 35 third-grade students and 13 middle school students planted the bulbs on the school grounds. The bulbs, planted on either side of the school building, will produce crocus flowers early next spring. (more…)

Enhancing Urban Schools with Nature

The parking lot of Weil Elementary mostly presents a typical urban landscape: wide strips of concrete, a large expanse of blacktop, a sea of parked cars and stretches of chain-link fence. However, amidst the stark blacks and muted grays of the school’s parking lot lies an oasis of color. Purple geranium blossoms grow beneath the fruited branches of a crabapple tree. Tall, feathery grasses, a gingko tree, pale lamb’s ear and glossy boxwood shrubs line a curved mulch path. A grassy hill rests behind a bed of pink rose bushes and a red-leafed ninebark shrub. District Outlines Process for School Closures and Realignment
