Free personal income tax and student financial aid workshops for with juniors and seniors in the Pittsburgh Public School District

In February 2010, the United Way, The Pittsburgh Promise, and NEED are joining forces to provide free personal income tax and student financial aid workshops to Pittsburgh Promise Applicant Families (households with juniors and seniors in the Pittsburgh Public School District).

Holocaust Survivor shares experience with Pittsburgh Peabody freshmen

English I students in the Pittsburgh Public Schools read Elie Wiesel’s Night, a nonfiction narrative of a Jewish teenager’s survival of the Holocaust. To complement this element of the curriculum and- most importantly- to further enlighten students’ sensibilities to inequity and injustice, Mr. Moshe Baran, a Nazi resistance fighter and survivor of the Holocaust, spoke to approximately 50 9th Graders at Peabody High School on Thursday, November 19. His accounts of peril and perseverance captivated our freshmen.

Students throughout the world participate in the Third Annual Pittsburgh Public Schools Megaconference

Based on the concept and design of the Megaconference Jr., students are given an opportunity to communicate and collaborate with each other using advanced multi-point video technology. Student presenters design and conduct videoconference-based presentations and activities focus on both academic and cultural issues. Saleem Ghubril, Executive Director of The Pittsburgh Promise, answered questions from Pittsburgh Public Schools students across the city about Pathways to the PromiseTM , a plan that helps ensure that students are on course to be eligible for Pittsburgh Promise scholarships upon graduation.

Art Contest for students in grades 9-12 announced by Allegheny County Immunization Coalition

The “Community Immunity” Art contest sponsored by the Allegheny County Immunization Coalition offers finalists an exhibition at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh from December 4 to 10. The winners will be announced on the final day of the show, and prizes will include scholarships to the Art Institute and a cash prize for top place. Entries are due November 12, 2009.
