Exciting new Summer Dreamers Academy begins Monday, July 12, 2010

Adventure in the City awaits more than 2,000 Pittsburgh students who have signed up to take place in the District’s new Summer Dreamers Academy.  The Summer Dreamers Academy is a premier free summer camp for all rising 6th,  7th and 8th grade students in the Pittsburgh Public Schools and is part of the continued District-wide effort to prepare students for the rigors of high school and beyond.  (more…)

Free Clinic for School Vaccinations needed in the Fall

Get shots for next school year out of the way and enjoy the Summer! Immunize now and become eligible for a buy-one-get-one pass for County Pools this Summer.

The Allegheny County Health Department is holding a special free vaccination clinic on Tuesday, June 8, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., for children who need to get caught up with the vaccines that will be required when they return to school in the fall.

The clinic, to be held at the Health Department’s office at 3441 Forbes Avenue in Oakland, will provide free parking after 4:30 p.m. in the lot behind 3333 Forbes Avenue. No appointment is necessary and parents should bring their child’s vaccination records to the clinic. (more…)

Marathon Relay Team exceeds initial fundraising target for Pittsburgh Promise, rallies for new donation goal

There’s less than one week to go until the Pittsburgh Marathon and the Pittsburgh Promise runners have been training hard for the big day.  Thanks so much to all of you who have supported the Promise by making a contribution on our team website!  If you would like to make a contribution, you can still do so at http://www.firstgiving.com/ppsThe team has exceeded the initial goal of $2,500 and is now aiming for $5,000.  UPMC will match $1.00 for every $1.50 that is contributed to The Pittsburgh Promise. District Summer Dreamers Academy Promises New Free Exciting Camper Experience

McDonald’s, Mars and Flying Cars: Spectacular Science and Let Your Creative Juices Flow: Exploring the Arts are the exciting literacy themes students will get to choose from as a part of the District’s Summer Dreamers Academy. The Board previewed the new camp at this evening’s Education Committee Meeting. Summer Dreamers Academy is a premier free summer camp for all rising 6th, 7th and 8th grade students in the Pittsburgh Public Schools and is part of the continued Districtwide effort to prepare students for the rigors of high school and beyond. Beginning July 12 through August 13, 2010 middle grades students will participate in this exciting camp that will provide daily literacy instruction while in the afternoon engage students in extracurricular activities. Students throughout the world participate in the Third Annual Pittsburgh Public Schools Megaconference

Based on the concept and design of the Megaconference Jr., students are given an opportunity to communicate and collaborate with each other using advanced multi-point video technology. Student presenters design and conduct videoconference-based presentations and activities focus on both academic and cultural issues. Saleem Ghubril, Executive Director of The Pittsburgh Promise, answered questions from Pittsburgh Public Schools students across the city about Pathways to the PromiseTM , a plan that helps ensure that students are on course to be eligible for Pittsburgh Promise scholarships upon graduation.

Pittsburgh Classical Students with Disabilities Volunteer at Local Food Pantry

Students from the Multiple Disabilities Support classroom at Pittsburgh Classical 6-8 volunteer two times a month at Crafton United Presbyterian Church. Part of the group stocks shelves for the community food bank. The other half of the students prepare and serve lunch for local senior citizens. (more…)
