PITTSBURGH, May 17, 2012 –Hundreds of fathers across Pittsburgh took their children to school today. Instead of dropping them off and waving goodbye, they headed inside the buildings. Fathers, grandfathers, uncles and other adult males who have made an impact in the life of a Pittsburgh Public Schools student participated in various activities, such as field day, story time, arts and crafts and career talks. New 3 Tier Routing System Adjust Start and End Times of Schools To Allow for More Efficient Bus Scheduling
PITTSBURGH, April 9, 2012 – As part of Phase 3 of its work to build a sustainable public school system, the District presented strategies that adjust the way students are transported to and from school. Presented at this evening’s Board Committee Meeting, the three transportation changes – implementation of a 3 Tier Routing System, increase use of yellow buses, and the alignment of the start and end times of the District Accelerated Learning Academies (ALAs) – stand to save the District approximately $1.2 million annually. At Pittsburgh Spring Hill K-5 over 75 people participated in a math night, “That’s Not the Way I Learned Fractions and Decimals!” on Wednesday, March 28, 2012. As 21 students in kindergarten through fifth grade presented concepts they have learned, other students helped coach their parents. Parents found equals, built or drew fractions, found equivalent fractions to add fractions with unlike denominators, and even multiplied decimals using the area method.
All presenters got a well-deserved “Math Expert” t-shirt with the school’s Comp Dog logo. (Comp is short for computations and Comp Dog certificates reward students who get 80% or better on math tests.) Participants also enjoyed a great dinner provided by Principal Todd Van Horn. Dr. Susan Smith, Math Specialist, organized the event. Parent evaluation forms confirm that the event was a winner. Five families were double winners. Not only did they learn more about fractions and decimals, but they also won a Giant Eagle gift card. Families of the following students were gift card winners: Jacquese Early, Jeremy Wehner, Gianna Charmello, Justice Campbell and Heavenly Roberson.
Presenters included: Kindergartener Krystal Dillard; First graders Anthony Dulski, Jeremy Wehner, and Gianna Charmello; Second graders Lene Pietrusza, Warrick Bruan, Kristie Rodriguez, Heavenly Roberson, Dennis Jones, Mareese Early, Third graders Serena Belgie and Gia Betancourt; Fourth graders Elliott Knickerbocker, Toni Keller, Aiesha Peterson, and Judah Campbell; Fifth graders Angelina Sustayta, Jonathan Lilly, Jacquese Early, and Grace Hooper.
A special thank you to the teachers and staff helped Mr. Van Horn and Dr. Smith during this very successful math night: Nadine Kennedy, Kelly Heilman, Tracie Hart, Wanda Hefflin, Lisa Lockwood, Danielle Loos, Helen Hill, Gretchen Eckroat, Becky Zastawa, Georgia Kotula, Charlotte Ranallo, Ben Burford, and Dorene Walker.
The Three Rivers Workforce Investment Board (TRWIB) and the Allegheny Intermediate Unit are challenging local youth to dream big through the “Imagine! Your Future Competition.” Open to students of all school districts in the County, the essay contest is being held in conjunction with the TRWIB’s 6th annual Imagine! The Pittsburgh Public Schools and River City Brass have teamed up to provide “Saturday Music,” a new free supplemental program designed to explore and grow the musical interests and abilities of Pittsburgh Public Schools students. The program will offer the following five ensembles for students in grades 5-12: Bridge Band (grades 5-8), Youth Brass Band (grades 9-12), String Ensembles (grades 5-12), and Gospel Choirs (grades 5-12).
