Citizens Bank 12th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Expressions of Freedom Writing Contest Winners

In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and to celebrate Black History Month in February 2013, Citizens Bank has partnered with the New Pittsburgh Courier, KISS-FM, WPXI-TV and the Pittsburgh Public Schools to sponsor the Twelfth Annual Expressions of Freedom writing contest for all students in the Pittsburgh Public Schools.  This year students were asked to describe one of Dr. King’s character traits that inspires them and explain how they can apply that trait to their daily life.  (more…)

Pittsburgh Westwood & the “Westwood Weeders”

The Western Pennsylvania Conservancy helped the Westwood 4th graders work to beautify Pittsburgh Westwood K-5.  Ms. Nyya Jones and Mr. Joseph Noll guided Mrs. Moeller’s 4th grade science class in the identification and removal of weeds. Known as the “Westwood Weeders,” students cleared weeds from several areas around the school.  A second visit educated the students in mulching our trees.  Thanks to the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy and the “Westwood Weeders” for a job well done!

Horace Mann Perfect Attendance/Student Achiever Bike Winners School Year 2011-2012

The Horace Mann Companies awarded six of the Pittsburgh Public School students with perfect attendance new bikes. One of the executive agents Vicki Korinko went to Pittsburgh Whittier, Pittsburgh Westwood, and Pittsburgh Schaeffer Intermediate to distribute the bikes to the winning students. One final presentation was held at Roosevelt Intermediate with Mr. Lewandowski at 8:00 a.m.  on Monday, June 11th.  The presentation washeld out on the playground before school!

 All the kids were so excited to be   able to take a new bike home with them!

PITTSBURGH, May 17, 2012 –Hundreds of fathers across     Pittsburgh took their children to school today.  Instead of dropping them off and waving goodbye, they headed inside the buildings.  Fathers, grandfathers, uncles and other adult males who have made an impact in the life of a Pittsburgh Public Schools student participated in various activities, such as field day, story time, arts and crafts and career talks. August Wilson Center for African American Culture accepting video applications for Youth Talent Showcase 2012

Efficiencies Gained Through New Transportation Delivery Model to Save District $1.2 Million

New 3 Tier Routing System Adjust Start and End Times of Schools  To Allow for More Efficient Bus Scheduling

PITTSBURGH, April 9, 2012 – As part of Phase 3 of its work to build a sustainable public school system, the District presented strategies that adjust the way students are transported to and from school.  Presented at this evening’s Board Committee Meeting, the three transportation changes – implementation of a 3 Tier Routing System, increase use of yellow buses, and the alignment of the start and end times of the District Accelerated Learning Academies (ALAs) – stand to save the District approximately $1.2 million annually.   (more…)

Deadline April 1, 2012: Essay Contest Asks Local Youth To Dream Big and Win!

The Three Rivers Workforce Investment Board (TRWIB) and the Allegheny Intermediate Unit are challenging local youth to dream big through the “Imagine! Your Future Competition.” Open to students of all school districts in the County, the essay contest is being held in conjunction with the TRWIB’s 6th annual Imagine!
