Pittsburgh Northview K-5 Kicks Off 25 Book Reading Campaign

Pittsburgh Northview K-5 kicked off the schools 25 Book Reading Campaign on Wednesday, September 23, 2009. With the help of the Pittsburgh Perry High School Band, the Carnegie Library, and Beginning with Books students are on track to achieving their goal of reading a total of 7,725 books by May 26, 2010. Authors visit Pittsburgh Colfax

Fourth and Fifth graders at Pittsburgh Colfax ALA celebrated Read-Across-America Day, March 2, with a visit from author Karen Lynn Williams.
In February, the Colfax Principal’s Book of the Month was Four Feet, Two Sandals co-written by Pittsburghers Karen Lynn Williams and Khadra Mohammed. This book tells the story of two girls from Afghanistan who meet in a refugee camp in Peshawar, Pakistan. Students learned about what it means to be a refugee, and the difficulties faced by people trying to flee violent situations around the world. (more…)

You Read, I Read, We All Read

Mrs. Musial’s 2nd grade were presenters in the 2009 Mega Conference Jr. on Februrary 19, 2009. There project was You Read, I Read, We All Read. Two other schools from Ohio participated in the interactive Reader’s Theatre and Rap activity with Carmalt. Students practiced their scripts ahead of time and event was very successful. (more…)

Pittsburgh Carmalt Awarded $10,000 from Verizon to Fund Meet the Author Program

Pittsburgh Carmalt PreK-8 was recently awarded $10,000 from Verizon’s Thinkfinity program, which funds the integration of new reading, writing and math resources into classroom learning. Pittsburgh Carmalt was selected to receive the grant to support the implementation of the school’s “Meet the Author” program which, through distance learning, will enable students from grades K-8 to meet and speak with the authors of whose books they will have read. Sunnyside’s celebrates Literacy Week

Pittsburgh Sunnyside K-8 Get Your Read On! was the theme for Sunnyside’s Literacy Week, held May 12-16, 2008. During the week, staff and students participated in numerous activities that celebrated the beauty of reading. (more…)
